The Trailer
My Reaction
The real appeal was never the base sandbox, it was diving into the server browser and stumbling onto whatever bizarre custom game mode someone had cobbled together that week. One night you’re a watermelon racing other watermelons through a floating Source-physics obstacle course, the next you’re deep into a round of Trouble in Terrorist Town trying and failing to keep a straight face while lying to your friends.
Overview
Garry’s Mod is a sandbox game built on Valve’s Source engine, designed by Garry Newman and released on Windows on November 29, 2006, followed by Mac OS X in 2010 and Linux in 2013. Developed by Facepunch Studios and published by Valve, it drops players into a physics playground with no set objectives, free to manipulate props, build contraptions, and mess with Half-Life 2 assets however they like. What turned it into something bigger was the community: custom server-hosted game modes multiplied endlessly, from roleplay servers to zombie horde shooters to bunnyhop platforming, and modes born there, like Trouble in Terrorist Town, ended up quietly shaping mechanics that later showed up in games like Among Us.
What I Liked
- The sheer unpredictability of the server browser; you genuinely never knew what strange, hyper-specific mode you’d stumble into next.
- Trouble in Terrorist Town remains one of the best social deduction formats gaming has produced, deceptively simple and endlessly replayable with friends.
- The open-ended sandbox toolset means the game’s ceiling is basically whatever the community can imagine.
- Its influence is still visible in genres and mechanics that came years later.
What I Didn’t Like
- Quality swings wildly from server to server since it all hinges on community-made content, so the good stuff takes some digging to find.
Verdict
Garry’s Mod earns its status as one of the games of all time, not for what ships in the box but for the sheer volume of weird, memorable, genuinely influential experiences its community built on top of it. Few sandboxes have ever paid off the freedom they offer this well.
