The Trailer

My Reaction

It’s brutal, cunning and time-consuming in the best way possible. Picking a start date changes the whole shape of the game before a single division has even moved, and every campaign afterward turns into a slow, deliberate grind of production lines, supply chains and front lines that never quite behave the way you planned.

Overview

Hearts of Iron IV is a grand strategy wargame developed by Paradox Development Studio and published by Paradox Interactive, released on 6 June 2016, chosen deliberately as the 72nd anniversary of the Normandy landings. Built on the Clausewitz Engine, it lets players take control of any nation in the world and steer it through World War II, starting either on 1 January 1936 or 14 August 1939, in single-player or multiplayer. Players can follow a nation’s historical path or diverge into entirely non-historical outcomes, managing everything from research and production to diplomacy and front-line combat. The game was announced in 2014 with an original late-2015 release window; at E3 2015, creative director Johan Andersson confirmed a delay to the first quarter of 2016 to resolve outstanding issues before it eventually launched that June.

What I Liked

  • Choosing between the 1936 and 1939 start dates meaningfully changes the strategic situation you’re walking into.
  • The freedom to go fully non-historical means no two campaigns with the same country ever really play out the same way.
  • Production, research and logistics all feel like they matter, not just front-line unit pushing.
  • Multiplayer turns the whole thing into a genuinely different, more chaotic kind of game.

What I Didn’t Like

  • The learning curve is steep and the sheer number of interlocking systems can be overwhelming early on.

Verdict

Hearts of Iron IV earns its reputation as a grand strategy heavyweight. The scope, the historical weight of the June 6th release date, and the freedom to rewrite World War II however you like all add up to a game that rewards the time it demands. It’s not a quick sit-down, but it’s rarely anything less than absorbing.
