Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen

A reaction to Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen: Freddie Mercury's genre-defying epic from the 1975 album A Night at the Opera. Rated 90/100.

Why I Reacted To This Song

It’s a work of pure musical genius, unlike anything that came before it.

About This Song

“Bohemian Rhapsody” was written by Freddie Mercury and released in 1975 on Queen’s album A Night at the Opera, produced by Roy Thomas Baker and the band. Running close to six minutes with no traditional chorus, it moves from a piano ballad into an operatic section and then a hard rock finale. It spent nine weeks at number one in the UK and returned to the top of the charts in 1991 after Mercury’s death.

First Impressions

The a cappella opening pulls you in right away and from there the song never stops surprising you.

My Reaction

“Bohemian Rhapsody” shouldn’t work on paper. Ballad, opera and hard rock all in one song sounds like too much, yet Queen pulls it off with total confidence. Freddie’s voice, Brian May’s guitar and those layered harmonies make it one of the greatest songs ever recorded.
