Reaction Chop Suey! by System of a Down

A reaction to Chop Suey! by System of a Down, a frantic, genre-bending highlight from Toxicity. Rated 84/100.

Why I Reacted To This Song

The vocal melodies swing all over the place and somehow it all still locks together perfectly.

About This Song

“Chop Suey!” was released in 2001 on System of a Down’s second album, Toxicity, produced by Rick Rubin. It became the band’s breakthrough single, pairing abrupt shifts between quiet verses and explosive choruses with lyrics about self-destruction. It remains one of the most recognizable songs to come out of the early-2000s metal scene.

First Impressions

The song jumps between moods almost violently, from soft and melodic to heavy and shouted within seconds and it never feels disjointed doing it.

My Reaction

What stands out most is how melodic the vocal lines stay even as the song keeps changing direction under them. Serj Tankian moves from a near-operatic lilt to full-throated aggression without ever losing the thread of the melody. That flow is what keeps the whole chaotic structure feeling intentional rather than random. Rick Rubin’s production gives it just enough polish to let that contrast land. It’s a genuinely unique vocal performance built on melodic flows.
