Da Funk by Daft Punk

A reaction to Da Funk by Daft Punk: the gritty French house breakthrough from the 1997 debut album Homework. Rated 84/100.

Why I Reacted To This Song

It’s a true masterpiece and I still find myself coming back to it all these years later.

About This Song

“Da Funk” was first released as a single in 1995 and later appeared on Homework, Daft Punk’s 1997 debut album. The French duo of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo built it around a gritty, squelching synth line and a heavy, steady groove. Its music video, directed by Spike Jonze, follows a man with a dog’s head wandering the streets of New York with a boombox.

First Impressions

That growling synth hook grabs you right away and the beat never lets go.

My Reaction

“Da Funk” is simple on paper but it hits hard. The synth line is raw and catchy and the groove is impossible to sit still to. It helped put Daft Punk on the map and it still sounds as fresh as it did in the 90s.
