“Don’t Dream It’s Over” was written by Neil Finn and appeared on Crowded House’s self-titled 1986 debut album. It became the band’s signature song and biggest commercial hit, reaching number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 in early 1987. My Reaction
It does not try to fix the faulty machinery of reality, it just offers a hand to hold while the wheels in motion turn. That’s the whole appeal and it’s rarer than it should be. So much of what gets called a “comfort song” oversells its own remedy, promising the ache will lift if you just believe hard enough. This one never makes that promise. It simply stays present through the difficulty, which ends up feeling far more trustworthy than any tidy resolution could.
