Why I Reacted To This Song
It’s one of the smoothest hip-hop songs ever made and it never gets old.

About This Song
“It Was A Good Day” appears on The Predator, Ice Cube’s 1992 album, and was released as a single in 1993. Produced by DJ Pooh, it’s built on a sample of The Isley Brothers’ “Footsteps in the Dark.” Instead of the anger that defined much of his earlier work, Ice Cube walks through a single day in South Central Los Angeles where, for once, everything goes right.
First Impressions
That mellow Isley Brothers sample sets a relaxed mood from the very first second.
My Reaction
“It Was A Good Day” works because it’s so simple. Ice Cube just tells the story of a day where nothing goes wrong and in his world that feels like something worth celebrating. The beat is smooth, the storytelling is vivid and it’s still a perfect song for a sunny afternoon.
