About This Song

“Mannish Boy” was first recorded by Muddy Waters for Chess Records in 1955 as an answer to Bo Diddley’s “I’m a Man,” which itself borrowed from Muddy’s earlier hit “Hoochie Coochie Man.” Muddy re-recorded it in 1977 for his album Hard Again, produced by Johnny Winter, and that version became one of the best known recordings of his career.

First Impressions

The stop-time riff hits like a hammer and Muddy’s voice fills every gap with pure confidence.

My Reaction

“Mannish Boy” barely moves off a single chord yet it never feels repetitive. Everything rides on Muddy’s delivery and the shouts and hollers from the band behind him. It’s raw, bold and larger than life.
