About This Song

“Train in Vain,” also known as “Train in Vain (Stand by Me),” is a song by English punk rock band The Clash. It closes their third studio album, London Calling (1979), but it wasn’t printed on the original track listing, so it played as a hidden track at the end of the record. It was later released as the album’s third and final single. Mick Jones sings lead on it.

First Impressions

The driving beat kicks in right away and Mick Jones’ vocals make it instantly catchy.

My Reaction

“Train in Vain” shows a poppier, more heartfelt side of The Clash. It’s a breakup song with real bite and a groove that’s hard to shake. Saving it as a surprise at the end of London Calling was the perfect finishing touch.
