My Reaction

This is a forgotten gem that got completely overshadowed by GTA V’s release. The gameplay is incredibly fun and innovative, and even today it holds up better than a lot of sandbox and action games that came after it.

Gaming: Cities: Skylines

Game/Publisher/Developer

My Reaction

Even with a sequel now out there wearing the name, the original still feels like the definitive version of this game. Years of DLC and mods have turned it into something the follow-up hasn’t come close to matching.

Gaming: Hearts of Iron IV

Game/Publisher/Developer

My Reaction

It’s brutal, cunning and time-consuming in the best way possible. Picking a start date changes the whole shape of the game before a single division has even moved, and every campaign afterward turns into a slow, deliberate grind of production lines, supply chains and front lines that never quite behave the way you planned.

Gaming: L.A.

My Reaction

L.A. Noire was a blast from the past to revisit. The interrogation and detective work still hold up remarkably well, thanks to the facial animation tech that was so far ahead of its time. The one real negative is the driving; the car handling feels stiff and syphoned, dragging down what’s otherwise an excellent experience.

Gaming: Master of Orion

Game/Publisher/Developer

Master of Orion, MicroProse, SimTex Software

My Reaction

This one was outside my scope back in 1993-1994; I came to it later. It’s a turn-based game through and through, and the race you pick changes everything about how a campaign plays out. Psilon was my nemesis every single time; their research lead snowballs so fast that by the midgame they’re fielding technology nobody else can touch.

Overview

Master of Orion is a turn-based 4X strategy game released in 1993, developed by SimTex Software and published by MicroProse. Players lead one of ten playable races; Humans, Alkari, Bulrathi, Darloks, Klackons, Meklar, Mrrshan, Psilon, Sakkra and Silicoids; through exploring, expanding, exploiting and exterminating across the galaxy. Each race has its own specialty: Humans lean into trade and diplomacy, the Bulrathi dominate ground combat, the Silicoids ignore pollution and can colonize even the most hostile planets but grow slowly, and so on. Races are also predisposed to like or dislike each other, and each carries its own research strengths and weaknesses.

Gaming: Rust

Game/Publisher/Developer

My Reaction

Rust is one of the most brutal PVP survival games out there. Anyone who plays or has just started playing Rust knows that this is a game with many ups and downs. At the beginning you are an ordinary “naked” who spawned with a rock and a torch by the beach, and in the next moment you already have your base and weapons. It depends on you and your skill, whether you become an unstoppable force on the server, or you just return naked to the beach.

Gaming: Red Dead Redemption 2

Game/Publisher/Developer

My Reaction

Red Dead Redemption 2 is widely regarded as one of the greatest games of all time, and it’s easy to see why. The graphics, the storytelling and the detailed open world all come together into something that feels like a genuine artistic achievement, even if the pacing and some of the gameplay mechanics can be frustrating at times.

Gaming: Team Fortress 2

Game/Publisher/Developer

My Reaction

Team Fortress 2 works because every class gives you something clear to do, and then throws you into matches where everything is happening at once. You are dodging rockets, chasing objectives, trying to stay alive and relying on teammates at the same time.

Gaming: Counter-Strike

Game/Publisher/Developer

My Reaction

Counter-Strike was very unique in 2000. Multiplayer gaming was still in an early stage and Counter-Strike changed the game completely. We played it in the dorms over T1, and it was unlike anything else; a tactical team-based shooter when most multiplayer shooters were still pure run-and-gun. I was into it.

Gaming: NHL 95

Game/Publisher/Developer

My Reaction

I played this one on PC. A friend got me going on PC games and we played NHL 95 together constantly. It was so fun.

My Reaction

Watch Dogs 2 is a gorgeous game. The San Francisco setting is beautifully realised and the hacking mechanics make the open world feel genuinely different from anything else out there. The tone is lighter and more fun than the first game and it works. An easy buy.

Gaming: Warcraft II

Game/Publisher/Developer

My Reaction

Warcraft II hooked me immediately. The choice between humans and orcs felt meaningful and the moment you start building your base and training units the game just pulls you in. The strategic depth was unlike anything else at the time. This was an easy buy and one I kept coming back to.

Overview

Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness is a real-time strategy game developed by Blizzard Entertainment and released in 1995. Players choose between the Alliance (humans) and the Horde (orcs), each with unique units, buildings and abilities. The goal is to gather resources; gold, wood and oil; build a base, train an army and crush the enemy. It features a full campaign for both factions, custom scenarios and multiplayer.
7 Days To Die, The Fun Pimps/Telltale Publishing, The Fun Pimps

First Look

My first impression wasn’t great. The graphics didn’t do much to grab my attention right away.

Trailer

My Reaction

What won me over was the map size, it’s massive. The game ran very smoothly, movement felt fluid and responsive. The performance held up well throughout. My only real complaint was the graphics; it’s not the prettiest game out there. Even so, I went ahead and bought 7 Days to Die.

Gaming: Grand Theft Auto 5

Game/Publisher/Developer

First Look

The graphics were stunning for 2013. Los Santos felt alive in a way no open-world game had managed before; the scale, the detail and the sheer ambition of it all was immediately apparent.

The Trailer

My Reaction

The trailer sold it immediately. Seeing the three-protagonist structure was a surprise; switching between Michael, Trevor and Franklin mid-mission was something fresh for the series. The world looked massive, the story looked cinematic and the chaos looked as fun as ever. This was an easy buy.
